Thomas Bridges was the main architect of what Charles Darwin called "one of the greatest miracles". He was referring to how the nomadic inhabitants of Fuegian channels turned into a civilized people. Bridges together with a group of Christian missionaries managed to build a town with more than 300 inhabitants. Although he had been born in the streets, he came to be a man of great culture and was able to compile a remarkable dictionary. He also worked as a pastor and was the leader of the community that would later become the city of Ushuaia.
