Tony Palmer dirige estea bella película, la única sobre el gran compositor inglés Henry Purcell. Se sabe muy poco sobre su vida, pero el guión, obra del fallecido John Osborne y de Charles Wood, resuelve este problema mediante el recurso del lanzamiento de un grupo de actores en la década de 1960 -que está investigando una obra de teatro sobre la vida del compositor- en un viaje de descubrimiento a Inglaterra, sobre finales del siglo XVII, el período extraordinario en el que Purcell vivió.

Es sin duda, la música de Purcell, la fuerza impulsora de esta dramatización, con una banda sonora espectacular llevada a cabo por John Eliot Gardiner.
